Artist Bio

Sarah Gee Miller is a Vancouver-based abstract artist who discovered her artistic passion later in life, beginning her creative journey after age 45.  Self-taught and driven, she transitioned from working dead-end jobs to becoming a full-time artist, initially exploring paper collages before moving into painting.  Her work is characterized by vibrant, hard-edged abstract compositions that explore clarity, equilibrium, and the expressive potential of colour.

Miller’s artistic approach is deeply philosophical.  She embraces what she calls a “Mesotopia” - a nuanced perspective between utopia and dystopia.  Her paintings often incorporate geometric shapes, particularly concentric circles, which she derives by distorting fonts through a digital process and using complex masking techniques.  Her art aims to create a sense of calm and elation, using geometry as a “transporter” to guide viewers into an alert yet tranquil state.

Miller has successfully sold her artwork worldwide and developed a distinctive style that blends modernist influences with a unique visual language. Her work has appeared in fine art books, periodicals, large-scale public artworks, wine labels, and more.

She lives and works in the Strathcona neighbourhood of Vancouver, continuously experimenting with new techniques and pushing the boundaries of her artistic expression. Despite starting her artistic career later than most, Miller remains deeply committed to her craft, believing she has not yet created her best work.

Artist statement

As a painter, my work is largely concerned with clarity, equilibrium, and the expressive possibilities of vibrant colour.

To me, hard-edged abstraction has an interesting duality.  It hides energy behind order and is capable of great emotional variance despite a minimal vocabulary.  To achieve these hard edges and shapes, I make extensive use of vinyl, tape, custom-made templates, and digital renderings, but the physical act of painting is always paramount.  Brush strokes, the natural lumps and swooshes of paint, form the counterbalance to the rigid formality of design.

I think in terms of series, and many of my series have a cohesive, narrative flow.  I try to tell as much of the story as I can in the title.  Very often, I write the story of a painting before I embark on it; there is always a tale, even if I am the only one who knows it.

Recently, I've welcomed softer, more biomorphic imagery into my work, forms and shapes that reference our natural world and our place in it.  I'm always experimenting with new ideas and methods, but bright, clear, saturated colours will always be a primary drive.  Above all, I’m hoping to create a sense of calm and elation as we walk through these challenging and divisive times

Sarah Gee Miller’s work has sold worldwide and is in both private and corporate collections.
